Last Light

(1999)

Solo Piano
Duration: 2:00 minutes

Last Light is a musical silhouette of a century’s end and occupies a unique space in time.

Composed on December 31, 1999, it serves as a sophisticated, moody meditation written during the final hours of the 20th century.

It is a work of deep atmosphere. It captures the stillness and the weight of a significant temporal transition, offering the pianist a chance to explore nuanced shading and sophisticated harmonic language within a brief, concentrated timeframe.

At just two minutes, Last Light is an ideal choice for performers looking to add depth to a program without over-extending duration.

It is suited for:

*Thematic Programming: Ideal for concerts focusing on time, transition, or Australian contemporary works.

*Encores: A quiet, lingering finish that leaves a lasting impression on the audience.

*Tertiary Assessment: Provides an excellent vehicle for demonstrating tonal control and interpretive maturity at an advanced level.

Sapphire Shimmer, Silica Slide

(2005)

Piano: 4 hands
Duration: 4 minutes
‘Sapphire Shimmer, Silica Slide’ was written in response to a gift I received. The gift was to go on a morning sand dune safari, riding four-wheel drive motorbikes in the mountainous dunes near Nelson Bay, New South Wales, Australia. Although terrifying at first, it was magnificent.

The coast was spectacular; huge white dangerous dunes and the sparkling ocean. We were told we had to ride exactly in the path of the leader or risk being fatally surprised by a dune that could collapse or avalanche. We rode as we were told and the exhilaration coupled with the beauty made for a wonderful morning. The bikes were noisy but the stillness of the ocean and sand was magic.

This piece is dedicated to Mavis Shannon, my childhood neighbour and piano teacher, who encouraged me musically and was like my second grandmother.
